There is nothing wrong with the book; however, for me it did not have the WOW factor suggested by many of the reviewers on Amazon.com (where I originally published a very similar review). This says as much about me as the book itself. I like books with layers and layers of details that can be read and reread to reveal additional nuances with each reading. This is not one of those books.
With that said, I would recommend the book if you are looking for something soothing and comforting. So if you are feeling under the weather, have had a rough week, are snowed in on a gray winter day, or struggling with insomnia here is a book that will provides escape without being too demanding. Garden Spells is a natural for pairing with some combination of a cup of your favorite warm beverage, a blanket, a purring cat, and a warm fire.
The story line and plot based on letting go of the past and healing one’s self and relationships is predictable. The “magical realism” in the book is well done and leaves the sense not of the extraordinary but rather an ordinary world that happens to be filled with magic. Ms. Allen makes up for the lack of plot-based excitement with quirky characters and interesting phrases.
When it comes to the major characters in the book, I was left wanting more. They would provide a wonderful cast for television show. Think Gilmore Girls combined with Under the Tuscan Sun and Chocolat with just a touch of Twin Peaks and a pinch of Northern Exposure.
Bottom line: worth a read but borrow rather than buy it (3.5 out of 5 stars or a solid B grade)
