I debated going to Valpo for the Farmer’s Market but decided to skip it. The gallon of gas it would take didn’t seem worth the possibility that their might be asparagus there. Instead I stopped by the local feed and garden center in hopes of sweet potato slips. It was once again a made house; I should go during the week rather than the weekends. For many people in this area, Memorial Day weekend is considered prime planting time in these parts. May 30 is our supposed “frost free” date. I struck out on the sweet potato slips
I did pick up a 4 pack of kind of sad bok choy starts. The were cheaper than one bunch at the store and I am hungry for a soup which will be better with a bit of bok choy. I need to replant some of the warmer weather crops I had started. The cucumbers and squash didn’t handle the recent chilly weather well. I also lost two of the basils I had planted
The rest of today will be puttering about the house and yard and enjoying the fact that it will reach almost 70 today and the sun is out. I need to figure out how to cook some chunks of lamb that I took out of the freezer. I should have kept them for the start of One Local Summer next week but I wasn’t thinking. The lamb represents the last of the meet I purchased from Farm Direct Meat at last year’s Mistletoe Market. Next week is the start of European Market; I assume Phyllis will be selling meat there this year. I don’t expect to buy all that much at the market this year given how much I am growing myself. Still I am looking forward to having the option to purchase local meat and yummy cheeses as treats. I am hoping for asparagus at least a couple of times. Later in the summer I’ll look for corn. Throughout the summer and fall I’ll keep an eye out for peaches and apples in season. The garlic from the Garlic Guy has kept wonderfully and I’ll stock up on a year’s worth of that during his two or three weeks at the market.I have enough honey for summer but I’ll stock up on it during the last few weeks of the market which ends in October. I need to find a source of local grain, dried beans, and eggs. Thankfully milk is now covered by Fair Oaks Farm and they have some cheeses as well.
What I am reading: I moved The Circle Within to the top of my reading list and started it last night. So far I like it a great deal. I am also reading Forty Signs of Rain but having a hard time getting into it. I hope it picks up because I like books that are a part of a series.
