On the local food front, I have a harvest update and a report on the first week of market season.
First, from the very local (aka my deck): I picked my first strawberry last evening. I should have waited one more day. It was still tasty dipped into Greek yogurt mixed with some raw honey.
Second: The local European Market opened today. Almost no local produce but far too much arts and crafts stuff, some plants, prepared foods, honey, dried produce and berries, and a few of my favorite vendor’s. Hopefully the mix will change as the season progresses. I had planned to visit Michigan City’s market as well but thanks to tire issues, that will wait another week. In fact, dealing with the tire will wait until Monday. I expect that my market pattern will alternate between Michigan City, Chesterton, and Valparaiso
My purchases:
Two packages of ham burger meat from Farm Direct Meats out of St. John, IN. (It was especially good to see them again)
A 6″ Strawberry Rhubarb pie Marilyn’s Bakery of Hobart, IN. This will be a new food for me to try.
Rosemary flat bread from Froehlich’s of Three Oaks, Michigan
Capriole goat cheese (produced in Greenville, IN which would stretches the definition of local)
