My possibilities for a local meal expanded considerably thanks to getting lost spontaneously exploring the back roads of Lake and Porter Counties in NW Indiana. The discoveries made a very expensive trip to the car care center more pleasant.
I have bought baked goods from Marilyn’s Bakery out of Hobart before but always at the Chesterton European Market. The bakery itself is located along side Johnson Strawberry Farm. The farm is featured in this story along with some recipes. Sadly there won’t be strawberries in the Farm store until this weekend and the U-Pick won’t open for another week or so after that. They did have some local asparagus and rhubarb. Some of each is safely tucked into my refrigerator.
Just down the road there was Remus Farms. From Remus Farms I purchased some eggs, some butter from Amish farms, some peach cider (not a big fan of that after one glass) and some sweet potato butter.
In addition to the garden centers at Johnson and Remus, I spotted some other nurseries in the area. The area also includes County Line Orchard which will be a source of pumpkins and apples later in the season. All of this and I haven’t even started to explore the options in LaPorte county or SW Michigan.
Lunch was tasty asparagus quiche and a slice of strawberry rhubarb from Marilyn’s. Dinner last evening was a salad from my own garden and home baked bread. Spring time tastes wonderful here in my corner of the world.
On a completely unrelated note: I want to try this semolina and raisins cake.

Oh my! I’ll have to get up there and relieve you of that peach cider, if you’re not going to be wanting it! *wink*
